In the heart of Detroit’s west side resides BRIA MILLER, affectionately known as “SLIM.” A full-time master makeup artist, Slim has carved a name for herself in the beauty industry with her expertise in natural glam, luxury applications, and special effects (SFX) makeup. Since embarking on her journey in 2018, Slim has transitioned from being self-taught to furthering her craft in California, driven by her passion for creating beauty and elevating storytelling through makeup. “I got into the beauty industry to give more of what I feel the world may need—the experience to feel beautiful,” Slim shares.
A Love for Film and Horror
Slim’s passion for makeup artistry in the film industry stems from her love of movies, especially horror. “I love looking at the glams on all actors and actresses and knew I wanted to be part of something major,” she explains. For Slim, makeup in film is more than a job—it’s an art form that demands respect. “Anyone can do makeup. Not everyone is a professional makeup artist.”
Collaborating on Set
On set, Slim is a team player, often seen engaging with directors, costume designers, and hairstylists. “You’ll always see me at either the monitor or talking to wardrobe about styles,” she says. Slim prioritizes harmony between makeup, wardrobe, and cinematography to ensure the visuals complement the narrative. Her dedication often finds her huddling with the director or DP to fine-tune the details.
Adapting to Changes
Last-minute requests are a common occurrence in the fast-paced world of film, but Slim handles them with professionalism and a critical eye. “I don’t like last-minute changes depending on the circumstance, but I’m always able to pivot,” she admits. However, Slim draws the line when requests exceed the budget or compromise the quality of her work. “I can only be as passionate as you,” she says, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and clear communication.
Ensuring Longevity and Realism
Slim’s applications are built to withstand long filming days and various weather conditions. “I never have to touch a face on set unless I’m doing a quick look change,” she boasts, attributing her success to technique over product. For Slim, makeup is a storytelling tool, bringing characters to life with realistic and visually compelling designs. “I offer realism makeup. I make scenes feel and look more believable.”
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Makeup Artists
To those looking to break into the industry, Slim offers invaluable advice: “Find your niche and stick to it. Keep your head held high and brushes on point. Don’t let anyone trick you out of your spot because they will try. Be the best at what you do and be kind.”
Future Aspirations
Slim’s sights are set on larger productions and a return to California. Her dream? To work on a horror film. “I aspire to just keep quality makeup in film. No more cake batter or inexperience,” she says.
